Hi, Liz:
I don't use Photoshop for these things. Focus and sharpness are determined by my aperture and shutter speeds in the camera. I do not use any soft focus filters or treatments in Photoshop. In terms of contrast, changing saturation, and working with curves can help if you are trying to make colors more intense or to stand out more.
