Editor's Choice Picks A Touch Call, Next MEP Theme Chosen | Maris Ehlers Photography

My editor's picks for this month's photo contest are:

This is a great image - I love the fiery background, the bokeh, the focal point and the detail. Submitted by Leanne

This is what I think plumeria must look like - by Brady, NYC

This image has GREAT bokeh, a lovely focal point and strong composition.

While he's not necessarily beautiful, he says new, birth and spring like none other!  By Shannon DeFord

And to Rachel Ulfers, my apologies!  I missed getting your images uploaded into the contest.  :(  I hope you can forgive me since I am posting them here.  Nice work! I couldn't post your collage, however, because it had too many images in it (limit for each participant is 3).  They are definitely "Editor's Choice" material!

Magnolia's by Dana

And the theme for next month's contest?  PETS!  Entries will be accepted starting June 1st.  Please watch the blog for specific rules and regulations, and don't forget to share - the more the merrier!

Please congratulate the winners - they deserve it!

Top Ten Winners of the MEP Spring Photo Contest Are Announced | Maris Ehlers Photography

Thank you for entering the MEP Spring Photo Contest this past month.  While it got off to a slow start, we ended up with some amazing entries!

It's kind of funny how these things work out.  I had been thinking that I hadn't had a photo contest on facebook for quite some time, when suddenly I received an email from someone who follows my page.  Her email was something to the effect of "Where are your photo contests?"

I thought here's an opportunity:  I told her I would run another contest if she would agree to be the judge.  It worked out perfectly!

While her last name shall remain nameless, her first name is Nicole.  Nicole took her assignment very seriously, but she has returned her list of top ten images.  Final judging for the winner will be this week.

Here is what she had to say about her selections:

"For the record, I'd like to note that I made cuts not based on how good/good of quality the pictures were. I made them based on how prominently the picture said "Spring" to me, as per the title of the contest, of course! This was truly a stellar bunch of pictures from amateur and professional alike. I'd like to commend everyone that made a submission!"

Here are her top ten choices, in no particular order:

1) #2 by Jill - Easter Eggs

Why: Great quality, vibrant colors, the decoration style, & Easter
Eggs definitely say "Spring"!

2) #3 by Meike - Trees in Grass

Why: The focus, & the brilliance of the green caught me!

3) #18 by (Jan) - Spring Wagon Wheel

Why I chose it: I liked that it seemed like a scene one might overlook, but that simple object with the flowers on it just had something that felt "right" about it. Best I can explain it!  Plus, it was taken with a mobile phone!

4) #32 by Lea - Fuzzy Dandelion

Why: The focus on the dandelion itself (definitely says "Spring"!), & capturing that little droplet was really cool.

5) #33 by Jill N - Tulips And Columns

Why: The Tulips, the columns, the fountain, the flowering trees, the centering...sooo much to love about this picture! Honestly, this was one of the easiest ones to pick!

6) #34 by Jill N - City Meets Country

Why: I love the quality. "City Meets Country" is what comes to mind here. I think that is captured profoundly well!

7) #36 by Becky - Purple Field Flowers

Why: It's easy to picture standing in a beautiful field of these flowere in the spring. The lighting is great!

8) #41 by Maya - Frog

Why: Quality, Subject...really, because this picture is just COOL!
*AND, frogs are fun. =)

9) #42 by Julie's 9 y/o - Baby Birds

Why: I have to admit, I was really impressed this was by a 9 y/o! That's pretty good quality, she captured the subject matter, and I kind of dug that the nest wasn't centered.

10) #43 by Lisa - Spring Water View in the City

Why: This picture is simply remarkable. That's all I really have to say about it!

The top 3 images will be chosen in the next round of judging this week.  Winners will be announced on the blog.  Editor's Choice will also be announced.

Be sure to tell us your favorites below!

If you have pictures in the top 10 (or, if you like the selections), please feel free to share this post... everywhere!  :)

Enter the Maris Ehlers Photography SPRING Photo Contest | Maris Ehlers Photography

UPDATED:  ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED UNTIL MAY 15TH!

Just when I think no one is paying attention what what I write, post or share, I get a message from a facebook follower named Nicole with the subject line "BEING NOSY".

What was she being nosy about?  She wanted to know where the MEP photo contests are!  Not only that, but she specifically wanted to know the details of when and theme.  So Nicole, this one's for you!

Tulips always say spring to me.  This was taken in March, right around the first day of spring, and since it's snowing here today, this is what spring in MN looks like!

MEP Spring Photo Contest

SPRING can have any interpretation or meaning: It can be anything that represents the season, the word, the idea of renewal, spring color, you name it!  Whatever comes to mind.

We gotta have rules, so here they are:

1. Entries accepted between now and the end of the day on 5/15/11 (before 12 midnight).  Images must be taken between now and the contest deadline.
2. Entries MUST be emailed to MEP (and not posted on facebook) at contest@marisehlersphotography.com with the word "SPRING" in the subject line!
3. The file MUST be a jpeg.  No other files will be accepted.  You will be asked to resend it.
4. Please feel free to spread the word that you've entered a contest, and "likes" are welcome and encouraged.
5. Please note that in order to be able to "like" an image, you must "like" Maris Ehlers Photography - that's Facebook's rule, not mine.
6. Please be AWARE that if you use a face or person in your image, in the body of your entry email you MUST tell me that you have a copyright release from the person in the image, or the parent/guardian if the person is a minor.  YOUR PICTURE WILL NOT BE POSTED WITHOUT this statement in your email.
7. This contest is open to amateurs, professionals and anyone in between.
8. "Likes" of an image are ONE element of the judging. An anonymous guest judge has been chosen by MEP to pick the winning image.
9. The winning image will receive all sorts of kudos, a blog post and you may become famous.
10. Entrants can be local or from anywhere else - the more the merrier!
11. Photo editing is acceptable.
12. MEP reserves the right to decline a photo for any reason (including inappropriate content, irrelevancy to theme, etc, etc).
13. When MEP posts your photo to the contest album on facebook, you will be tagged in the image if you are a "friend".  If you wish to be tagged then please send a friend request.

Please allow for up to 48 hours for your image to post.  Winners will be announced sometime this spring.  Ha ha.  Actually, no later than  May 20, 2011.

I think that's it!!! Good luck, and if you have any questions at all, please let me know!

Win a Free Child Spring Mini Portrait Session | Maris Ehlers Photography

Ok, so here's how to enter to win a FREE Child's Spring Mini-Session on either Friday 4/1 or Monday 4/4.

First of all, here is what is included / rules:

  • A free 45 minute photo session at MEP (time tbd based on other sessions those days)
  • Children must be between the ages of 2-16
  • Limit 3 children
  • Sets we will have available that day vary, but spring colors are the theme
  • MEP owns the copyrights to the original files (this is normally the case) and prints/products, etc., will be made available for you to purchase at the normal rates
  • I need a minimum of 50 people to enter in order to give a session away
Here's how to enter:

1.  Post a picture of the WORST or FUNNIEST professional photo you ever paid money for.  Please, please, do not include any information on the photographer.  These are meant to be humorous, not hurtful.

You can either post it on your blog and post the link on my page, or you can post it on your facebook page and post the link to it on my photography page (obviously you'll probably need to scan the image first unless you have a digital copy).  Whenever you post a photo on your facebook page it has it's own url.  Simply copy that and paste it on my wall if you chose that option.

3.  Please also tell us about the picture.  It doesn't have to be a picture of your child.  It just has to be a professional picture, i.e. a picture that you paid for in some way.

2.  Comment on this blog that you've entered, and post your link below.

3.  Comment again and tell us who the session would be for if you won.

4.  Spread the news on your wall for an additional entry (must provide a link to this blog post on your wall).  After all, the more pictures we see and chuckle over, the more fun it will be.

So all in all, if you do each of these things, you'll have four chances to win.  We may provide you with additional chances over the next few days.

Below is one from our family.  When H was an infant I was bound and determined to take him in for a professional sitting.  I really wish I could find the rest from this session.  As you can see in this one, the photographer had basically scared the you know what out of him and you can totally see it in his face.  Not only did I buy these hysterical pictures, but I gave them out to everyone as planned.  We had many, many a good chuckle over these.  If I find the rest of them I promise to post.

Here is how the winner will be chosen:   RANDOM DRAWING  on  Wednesday, March 29 at 7:00 a.m.

Have fun!  Can't wait to see your pictures.

My Entry For This Week's I Heart Faces Photo Challenge - Sun Flare | Maris Ehlers Photography

My entry this week for the I Heart Faces challenge "Sun Flare" is this picture I took on a glorious summer evening this past July.  The sun was near setting, giving everything, even the grass, a lovely yellow glow.  I love how it created the best rim lighting on her hair!

My I Heart Faces Entry This Week | Maris Ehlers Photography

My entry for this week's I Heart Faces Photo Challenge, which is the Best Face of February, is of my 7 year old son.  He dreams of being a scientist, and so we spent an hour or so making his childhood dreams come true.  It was really hard to decide which image to pick, but I chose this one because it simply makes me laugh, and it is HIS look when he does something against my advice and warnings -  and the results are exactly what I told him they'd be.  BAD.  He is definitely the most curious kid I know!

This submission goes along with my blog entry this morning, which is all about childhood dreams.  It tells the story of this picture and reminds us to not only remember our own childhood dreams, but to nurture our children's.

My Entry to "I Love Faces" Photo Contest | Maris Ehlers Photography

This picture is from a wedding in Minnesota this past November.  Brian and Sara's big day fell on our first snow storm of the season, which happened to be a blizzard.  Here are some other favorites of mine from their wedding.

Initially, I felt so bad for the bride and groom because of the bad weather and the bad roads, but in the end, we made the most of it and some of my most favorite wedding pictures to date are from this day.

I was beyond excited when we got this shot.  The sun had for the most part set, the wind was howling and the air coming off of the waves from Lake Minnetonka was absolutely frigid, but I guess this is proof that love can keep you warm.

~Enjoy.

My Entry for the I Heart Faces People's Choice Photo Challenge | Maris Ehlers Photography

This is my entry for I Heart Face's People's Choice Photo Challenge / Best Face Photo in January, which is their theme for this week.

This picture of my daughter was taken on our stairs in front of a window.  You can't beat natural light, especially when it is lightly diffused by a layer of winter clouds.

Photo Contest Winner for July 2010 | Maris Ehlers Photography

This was a tough competition! We had five judges from across the U.S. and several of the photos were within one vote of each other, A tie had to be broken for 5th place by votes, and I think you'll be pleased with the winners. First place receives a FREE portrait sitting with Maris Ehlers Photography.

1st place, and our free portrait session, goes to Jill with a youthful picture of a Grandpa and his two grandsons on a toy tractor. I love this one, and so many other people did, too! It is the epitome of youthful, especially because Grandpa is a farmer. I guess a love of big machines never gets old. Congratulations, Jill!

Alyssa took 2nd place with this darling photo of some children reaching through a fence to a cute little foal. One judge, Skye, said "I think the foal was as interested in the kids as they were in it.  Youthfulness is curiosity.  The only hand not touching is the older, less curious one."

Missy came in third with the image of her Valentine Grandparents. This is such a sweet image, and what makes it youthful in my eyes is the fun with the paper valentine (well, that and the kissing - ha ha). Remember the day when we actually did make our valentines out of fun paper hearts that we would cut out?

Fourth place goes to Courtney (who you may remember won last month's competition) for the image of the little girl and the calf, which she called "Connected Through the Heart", which is very fitting.  I hadn't met Courtney before she won last month's competition, but as she is local she has since joined me on a couple of shoots, and she does some nice work!

"New Life" by Ryan earned 5th place.  I would guess these hands belong to Ryan and his daughter when she was born.  :)   Way to go, Ryan!  It's lovely.

Congratulations to all of you, and a huge thank you to all of you who posted images.  It is so fun to see what everyone is posting, and I am enjoying getting to know each of you a little bit through your portraits.  Keep 'em coming, because the August competition is going to be a fun one!  The theme:

The Dog Days of Summer!

Here's a little example to get you thinking!  This image I snapped the other day became the inspiration for August because:  a) what says summer better than kool-aid moustaches on a bunch of kids who are all wet from playing water games.  My husband so KINDLY introduced my kids to kool-aid this past week, and they've had a red moustache ever since.  Ha!  So not a good idea!!!!  Our dog, Ruger, is in the background, so that made me think of adding the phrase "The Dog Days of Summer" to the theme just to make it a little more interesting - please interpret as you like!  :)

Images will be accepted from now until August 15th, 2010, and MUST BE EMAILED AS A JPEG to contest@marisehlersphotography.com.  If your image has a title, please save the file as the name.  It will make it much easier for us here on the receiving end of things!

The winner will receive a $40 gift certificate to National Camera Exchange here in the Twin Cities (but can also be used online as well, so start snapping and sending!

Cheers,

Maris
