What to Wear for Family Pictures - Guest Blogger | Maris Ehlers Photography

I am so pleased to have Dawn Fryxell, owner of Lucky Girl Jewels and Styling here in Minneapolis (also the stylist for MEP's {wow} sessions) contribute this great piece on coordinating a family wardrobe for fall photos.
We visited a little bit about what my thoughts are from the photographer's point of view (start with mom first and think about the color palette where the images will be displayed), and she took it from there.  I wanted her to incorporate pieces that would be easy to find and easy on the wallet, and she did a fantastic job.

I think planning the wardrobe for your family session can be really overwhelming and one of the reasons why moms delay booking them.  Here, Dawn breaks it down person by person to create some fun, contemporary yet classy looks.

If you like what you read, please take a moment and let her know.
Enjoy!

FALL FASHION!
The air is getting cooler, the trees are starting to change, and with it comes amazing fall fashion. Put away the pastel colors and get out your bold jewel and earth tones!  It’s time for snuggly sweaters, fitted cardigans, fitted jackets, jeans, and boots galore!
Fall is a favorite time to plan family portrait sessions to take advantage of the gorgeous colors! Hope you book yours today with Maris Ehler’s Photography.  Often times the biggest challenge is finding clothes for the whole family that complement each other and the vibrant colors.  I’m here to help with your wardrobe planning and to offer some helpful hints!
  1. First of all, start your wardrobe planning around you, Mom!  I’m also a Mom and know we often put everyone else first, but not this time!  Pick a warm color that you really like and plan your outfit around it.  Fall colors to consider are jewel tones such as amethyst (shade of purple), emerald, and sapphire.  These bold colors will brighten up fall’s neutrals.   Earth tones are also good picks, such as, chocolate, camel, and olive.  These colors compliment most skin tones.
A good rule of thumb is to choose a top with your choice of color.  Good picks are fitted blazers, cardigans, or sweaters.
  • Next select your bottoms, jeans are the perfect choice for fall.  Your best bet is dark denim with a boot cut.  Dark denim elongates your legs and makes you look leaner!  If you are going to splurge on one thing, I recommend buying a designer pair of jeans!  They are an investment, but are worth the money and will last!  My favorite designer brands are 7 for All Mankind, Joe’s, and Not Your Daughter’s Jeans.
  • Now it’s shoe time!  Go with boots!  If you have a boot cut jean, wear a bootie or ankle boot.  If you choose a skinny jean, tall boots over the jean add a trendsetting style!   Black, brown, camel, and grey are neutral tones that will go with anything!

ok, you are ready to coordinate your family’s looks.  It’s important to find complimentary colors for the rest of the family.  Here are examples:
  • Neutrals – brown, black, softer greens, camel , cream
  • Bold –navy, purple, fuchsia, gold, vibrant green
  • Don’t shy away from prints; just be sure if two people have printed tops on, they need to be different size prints.  Example, one child has on plaid shirt, Dad or other child has on larger strip shirt or solid.
EXAMPLE LOOKS
Look 1:  Teal embellished boyfriend cardigan from Kohls (Apt. 9 – Sale price $27.99).  Black skinny belt, also from Kohls (Apt. 9 - $12), should be worn over the cardigan to emphasize your waist.  Dark denim jeans such as these, Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (Macy’s - $98) are the perfect choice with the cardigan.   Love these grey suede Worthington booties from JcPenny ($49.99). To finish the look, add some hoop earrings, and a cocktail ring.  You now have a WOW look, MOM!!

Kids – Love the grape knit dress and tights – The bold colors compliment Mom’s Teal cardigan (Mini Boden - $54) – The Grey layered polo shirt from GapKids ($19.50) neutralizes the bold colors in Mom and Sister.  Pair the shirt with some cool denim jeans (Gapkids $29.50).

Dad – The military mockneck sweater from Gap ($69.50) in Charcoal or Navy fit in with the rest of the looks.

Look 2:  Mom look feminine in this rich green Simply Vera Wang top from Kohl’s (Sale price $32.99).  Pair this soft feminine top with dark 7 for All Mankind jeans (Macy’s - $155).  Love these black Worthington boots from JcPenny (89.99).  If you choose to wear skinny jeans, wear these boots over the jean.  Heels add height and elongate your legs.  Polish off the look with dangle gold earrings, and cocktail ring!  The look is fresh and fabulous!

Kids – This dress from Macy’s ($49.50) is so sweet, perfect for your little girl.  A long sleeve cream shirt, cream tights, and patent leather mary jane shoes finish off the look. This Tommy Hilfiger Chambray shirt (sale-$25.88) works with Mom and Sister.  Pair it with kaki cargo pants for a perfect look.

Dad – Looks cool in this Calvin Klein black polo shirt from Macy’s ($41.99).  Put on a pair of dark denim and the look is complete!
Look 3: Mom, an INC long sweater from Macys ($69) is sophisticated and stylish.  You can wear a thin belt over it if you want to further emphasize your waist.  Love the brown tone!  This look is perfect with a pair of denim jeans.  Love these camel color Decree boots from JcPenny ($48.99).

Kids – Love this green plaid Ralph Lauren shirt from Macys ($30).  It works with mom’s brown tone sweater.  It can go with kaki cargo pants or dark denim.  This ruffle embellished shirt from Children’s place ($12.50) in cream works with Mom and Brother.  Finish the look with a distressed jean skirt also from Children’s place ($24.50) and textured sweater tights in brown or cream.

Dad – Love this olive Oscar De La Renta zip sweater from Macys ($60).  Pair it with jeans and Dad’s look is complete!
