I had quite the busy week; I went to Texas for a wedding Friday through Sunday, and spent the day in downtown Stillwater yesterday. So, needless to say, I had plenty of images to chose from for this week, but the Stillwater liftbridge won out.
Not much of a story behind this one; I'm just a sucker for blue skies and text.
And a peculiar thing to know just in case you ever visit this bridge: it connects Minnesota to Wisconsin...but once you get to the Wisconsin side, the sidewalk disappears and you're left with a skinny dirt trail that leads to no where. Consider yourself warned :-)

Courtney and I have decided that I will critique the pictures that she posts here so that others can see the comments and hopefully share their viewpoints as well.
I love it when a photographer finds something interesting in the ordinary, and this picture is an example of that.
I don't often stop long enough to take pictures of things, so I always admire when a still life image draws me in.
So, on to the critique:
Here's what I like about this image:
1. I like the angle. The focal point is off center, and the weight of the image is off center as well. That immediately draws me in.
2. I like seeing the bridge run off into the background.
3. I immediately think this is not a bridge for distracted drivers. That's a lot of signage all in one place. The angle in which Courtney shot it also makes everything look closer together (the signs in particular) perhaps than they really are.
Here is how I think she could improve on the image (after all this is meant to be a critique):
1. DOF - Her depth of field is higher, and so most of the image remains in focus, even near the back of the frame. I think it could be more compelling and have a stronger focal point with a narrower depth of field.
2. I would have even exacerbated the angle a bit more. Perhaps shooting from closer to the ground.
3. Lastly, a horizontal frame might not have gotten so much of the blue sky, but it wouldn't have cropped the far left edge of the bridge, which naturally my eye is looking for as it searches the frame.
Those are my thoughts. We'd love to hear yours as well. Courtney is trying to learn as much as she can this summer, and so all comments / thoughts / observations are welcome!
